PEST CONTROLLER (Exterminator)

We are proposing on a 5-year contract at Camp Pendleton, CA. and seek highly experienced, qualified employees to fill these positions. 

 

JOB FUNCTIONS: I

Overview: The Pest Controller sprays chemical solutions or toxic gases and sets mechanical traps to kill pests that infest buildings and surrounding areas, fumigates rooms and buildings using toxic gases, sprays chemical solutions or dusts powders in rooms and work areas, places poisonous paste or bait and mechanical traps where pests are present; may clean areas that harbor pests, using rakes, brooms, shovels, and mops preparatory to fumigating.

 

This position requires to control pests common to the installation and surrounding area.  From assigned work orders or inspection schedules, contractor inspects various buildings and areas such as offices, shops, barracks, improved and unimproved grounds, drainage ditches and garbage collection and disposal sites. Individual works with a wide variety of insects, vertebrate and plant pests.  Checks for visual evidence of pests including but not limited to: ants, fleas, bedbugs, bees and wasps, mice, mosquitoes, rats, roaches, silverfish, spiders and ticks.  Utilizes suitable Integrated Pest Management control methods to reduce and control hazards to public health, stored products, structures and vegetation. Mixes general and restricted use chemicals and mediums according to strict guidelines and applies them to appropriate areas; also mixes approved common chemicals and mediums according to specific instructions.  Baits and sets traps and repellents for control of rodents and certain bird pests. Independently plans work sequences and conducts trouble-shooting of buildings and grounds for evidence of conditions conducive to damage and infestation by insects, rodents, predatory animals and other pests.  Individual assembles equipment and materials for specific assignments; uses spraying and dusting equipment which requires (1) using appropriate formulas and guidelines to insure proper balance of pesticides and (2) the selection of equipment and setting of controls for wind, terrain and population conditions.  Must be able to locate and identify pests in stored products in warehouses and commissaries to plan and carryout appropriate pest control measures.

 

This person must be familiar with the habits and physical characteristics of common pests as well as knowledge of lifecycles (stages of development) and feeding habits of a wide variety of pests.  Must recognize conditions conducive to pest infestation and be able to detect concealed infestations by common pests.  Must have knowledge of common chemicals and pesticides used for specific condition, selecting chemicals according to growth stages of pest.  Must be skilled in pesticide and toxic chemical disposal including (1) the proper use of safety procedures, (2) poison baiting techniques such as using zinc phosphide bait for rodent control and (3) techniques used to trap gophers and ground squirrels. Must be certified and licensed as a Pest Controller by the State of California and have a valid California Drivers License.
